Auction Results: November 2024

Michael Bowman's November 30th auction at Chudleigh included a mix of unusual collectors' items and valuable jewellery, resulting in one of the most successful events  to be held by the auctioneer this year.

A group of five small Bronze Age axe heads provided an early talking point in the day, when an internet bidder from London paid £2,000.  The biggest surprise of the sale, however, came when Chinese telephone  bidders from the Chinese mainland and Canada were pipped by a London-based Chinese internet bidder, who paid £5,100 for a small white jade carving of a Temple Dog.  The 5" high study of a Temple Dog with attendant and ball had been estimated at just a few hundred pounds.

Watches were led by the 18ct gold Rolex Day/Date with original paperwork and box, which was bought by another internet bidder from London for £8,200.  A gent's 18ct gold Omega DeVille quartz bracelet watch stayed locally at £3,100. An internet bidder from the Midlands appreciated the refinements offered by a 1947 stainless steel Patek Philippe with square dial, paying £2,200 for his prize.

The jewellery section included a 14ct gold bangle set with a large natural yellow Ceylon sapphire and diamonds, which went to a Hampshire telephone bidder for £3,600. A London telephone bidder bought the large rectangular emerald & diamond cluster ring for £3,900.  Another London bidder taking the 1.5 carat fancy brown diamond brooch at £2,800.  The star of the sale stayed in Devon, however, when a local couple in the room made a winning bid of £9,500 for a certified 3.7 carat cushion cut diamond solitaire ring.
