Eyebrows were raised when a large 13" high Whitefriars 'Drunken Bricklayer' vase in meadow green doubled its estimate to a Berkshire internet bidder for £2,300. This had been treasured by its local vendor since being bought new in the 1970's. An Arts and Crafts inlaid oak secretaire was another surprise when it also sold for £2,300 against an estimate of £400-600.

A 72 piece set of American 'Gorham' silver cutlery was bought by a local bidder for £2,900, whilst a certified natural bronze pearl pin brooch sold for an unexpected bid of £3,100 courtesy of a London internet bidder.

Michael Bowman's November 29th auction at Chudleigh Town Hall proved to be one of the most successful sales to have been held by the auctioneer in his 39 years of business! Although no high profile items were on offer, there was such strong demand that few items were left unsold.

Another London bidder took the best of the certified sapphires on offer, a 4 carat colour change Ceylon sapphire & diamond cluster ring, which realised £3,900.

The final lot of the day was an 18ct gold watch chain with stamps to each link. Despite the very strong price of gold, such chains are in high demand and its hammer price of £4,800 to an internet bidder from Wolverhampton, far exceeded its bullion value.

Michael Bowman is now accepting suitable entries for his next auction to be held at Chudleigh on January 31st and is available for free consultation by appointment at Chudleigh Town Hall or Kingsteignton each Monday afternoon.
